Sophie

Anne Shirley's cat. Significantly more opinionated than a normal cat, and possibly more aware.

Overview

Sophie is a cat. This is the simplest accurate statement about her, and it may also be insufficient.

She belongs to Anne Shirley — or more precisely, she has decided that Anne Shirley belongs to her. The distinction matters to Sophie, if not to Anne.

Behavior

Sophie displays an unusual degree of attunement to Anne's emotional state. When Anne is calm, Sophie is calm. When Anne is distressed, Sophie becomes agitated in ways that seem disproportionate to normal feline empathy. When Anne's magic activates unexpectedly, Sophie is invariably already watching the spot where it manifests.

Whether this represents magical sensitivity, extraordinary feline instinct, or something else entirely is a matter of ongoing debate among Ashwood students.

At Thornwood

Sophie has made herself at home in the Ashwood common room with the confidence of an entity that has never once doubted its right to be anywhere. She has opinions about other students, furniture placement, and the quality of the chandelier vine's behavior. These opinions are communicated through a vocabulary of looks, positions, and silences that Anne claims to understand perfectly.

No one has successfully argued with Sophie.

Notable

  • Breed unclear. Color: opinionated.
  • Arrived at Thornwood with Anne. No one is certain how.
  • Has been observed sitting in locations that seem intentional in retrospect
  • Aatos Ilmari acknowledged her once with a brief nod, which she returned. Neither has explained this.
