Overview
Matthew Cuthbert is a man of very few words who adopted Anne Shirley when the rest of the world was returning her. He and his sister Marilla are Anne's family -- the first people who looked at a girl whose emotions broke windows and decided to keep her anyway.
Matthew understood Anne before Thornwood, before the Gift had a name, before "Primal Heartcraft" meant anything. He understood her because understanding doesn't require magic. It requires patience, and Matthew has that in quantities that border on the geological.
At Thornwood
Matthew does not come to Thornwood. But Anne carries him with her in the way she carries everything important: dramatically, completely, and with a fierce protectiveness that occasionally startles people who assumed she was only loud.
