Overview
Long John Silver is a navigator who arrived at Kingsreach seventeen years ago with one leg, a parrot that speaks in map coordinates, and a reputation that changes depending on who's telling the story. In the taverns, he's a retired explorer. In the shipping offices, he's a consultant. In the rooms where people speak quietly, he's the man who found the Uncharted Route and survived it — barely, minus a leg, plus knowledge that the Wayfinders' Guild would very much like to acquire and very much cannot.
He takes an interest in Jim Hawkins the way a chess master takes an interest in a prodigy — with genuine admiration and absolute willingness to sacrifice the prodigy if the game requires it.
Gift
Silver's Gift is Cartomancy, like Jim's — but older, rougher, learned without institutional structure. His maps don't just show paths. They show leverage. He can draw a route between two points that passes through someone's weakness.
Whether he still practices or whether the loss of his leg was the price of his last great map is a question he answers differently every time he's asked.
Relationship with Jim
He is Jim's mentor, his betrayer, and the only adult who has ever treated Jim as an equal. Their relationship is the axis of the Jim Hawkins series — because Silver genuinely cares about Jim AND genuinely will use him. Both things are true. Neither cancels the other. Jim must learn to navigate a person who is simultaneously trustworthy and treacherous.
Notable

- Companion: a parrot named Flint, who recites coordinates to places Silver claims don't exist
- His cane taps out rhythms that Jim eventually realizes are encrypted navigation instructions
- Has met Aatos Ilmari. Says he hasn't. His parrot disagrees.
