Overview
Heartcraft is the magical tradition practiced by most students at Thornwood Academy. It is rooted in the relationship between human emotion and the natural world — specifically plant life. Practitioners channel their feelings through botanical connections to produce magical effects.
The tradition is formally called Botanical Heartcraft, though students and faculty simply say "Heartcraft."
How It Works
Heartcraft operates on a simple principle with infinitely complex applications: strong emotion, properly directed, makes the natural world respond. Joy produces growth. Fear produces thorns. Grief produces decay. Love produces — well. It depends on the love.
The key distinction is between feeling and channeling. Anyone can feel. Heartcraft requires learning to direct feeling through a botanical medium without being consumed by it.
Gift Classifications
- **Primal**: Extremely rare. Magic operates at massive scale with minimal conscious direction. The emotion IS the spell. Dangerous and difficult to control.
- **Standard**: The most common classification. Strong connection to botanical life, able to produce reliable effects with training.
- **Latent**: Gift is present but dormant. May activate under extreme emotional stress or may never fully manifest.
The Four Groves
Thornwood Roots students into Groves based on how their Gift operates:
- **Ashwood**: Creative, instinctive, emotionally raw. Magic emerges from feeling.
- **Ironwood**: Precise, disciplined, technically excellent. Magic emerges from direction.
- **Elmwood**: Steady, nurturing, community-oriented. Magic emerges from care.
- **Willowwood**: Adaptive, creative, unconventional. Magic emerges from perspective.
Important Note
Heartcraft is Anne's tradition — it is NOT the only magical discipline at Thornwood. The academy houses multiple traditions. Other characters from other series may practice entirely different forms of magic. The Gifts of Making, Restorative Heartcraft, and other systems exist alongside Botanical Heartcraft.
