charactersFirst appears in: Dorothy and the Thornwood Trials

Dorothy Gale

A Kansas farm girl who approaches elemental chaos with methodical common sense. The elements find this hilarious.

Overview

Twelve years on a farm that's one bad season from not being a farm at all has taught Dorothy two things: you work, and things need doing. Dorothy is practical. Dorothy is capable. Dorothy does not waste time on things she cannot fix.

Then the wind stops. Not dies down. Stops. Something under the earth is breathing.

Gift

Dorothy's Gift is Elemental Binding -- the ability to form partnerships with fundamental forces. Wind. Storm. The raw, ancient energies that predate human magic. Her mother had the same Gift. Her mother went into the sky, and the sky kept her.

The risk: losing yourself in the element, becoming more storm than person.

At Thornwood

Rooted into Willowwood, the strategic and practical Grove, which is ironic because her magic is the most wild and uncontrollable tradition at Thornwood. She approaches elemental chaos with a farm girl's methodical common sense.

She bonds with Huck over being practical outsiders from the American frontier. Jim's maps show her storms before they arrive.

Notable

  • Rooted into Willowwood Grove
  • Companion: Toto, the most heavily suffused non-human in the western hemisphere (maintains the fiction of being a normal dog)
  • Cheerful underreaction to terrifying situations: "Well, that's not ideal."
  • Has heard the Wellspring knocking
