Overview
Anne Shirley is an orphan who spent years believing the catastrophic events that followed her emotional outbursts — storms, blooming flowers, cracking foundations — were coincidences or punishments. They were neither. They were Primal Heartcraft, the rarest and most dangerous form of emotion-driven nature magic.
She arrives at Thornwood Academy Rooted into Ashwood Grove, the chaotic creative house nobody expects to produce great wizards. She is loud, dramatic, passionately opinionated, and entirely unprepared for the discovery that everything she has spent her life suppressing is actually the source of her power.
Gift
Anne's Gift is classified as Primal — meaning her magic operates at a scale and intensity far beyond standard Heartcraft. Where most Ashwood students can coax a flower to bloom, Anne can reshape entire landscapes when her emotions run unchecked.
The cost is proportional: suppression kills Primal Gifts permanently. Anne cannot learn to control her power by pushing it down. She must learn to channel it, which means learning to feel everything fully without being destroyed by it.
At Thornwood
Anne's relationship with Thornwood is complicated. She loves the academy with a ferocity that surprises everyone, including herself. But her power makes her a liability — her emotions affect the environment around her, and in a school full of students practicing delicate magic, an uncontrolled Primal is dangerous.
Her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe (Ironwood) is the collision of two philosophies: chaos and control, feeling and directing. Neither is wrong. Both are incomplete without the other.
